At least that’s what all the hype was about, when you were growing up and into high school. Everything was about going to college. Prior to the 1960’s going to college was a privilege. The 1960’s ushered in the new idea that college became a right. With that more and more attended colleges across the country filling career fields like never before and producing an over abundance of the highly educated. In short, more supply than there was demand, in the career fields that required a college education. Educated college graduates were then finding the need to take on part time jobs in areas other than what they went to school for.

Is there a piece of jewelry that you feel particularly lucky while wearing? Maybe there is an article of clothing – your lucky team shirt – that you will use if you bet on the big game today. Some people insist upon eating a certain type of food, before they take their chances at a competition. Others insist on checking with the stars – horoscopes, not celebrities. And then of course there are the lucky charms – no not the breakfast cereal.
The Irish for example have a system of Lucky leafs on the four leaf clover – fantastic health can be found in all four leaves while a lover of good faith can be found in three; two leaves might help you with your online competition due to the fact that they apparently assure wealth and only one leaf means that fame may be the source of your fortune. There are of course horse shoes, medallions, ladybugs, the number seven, lucky coins and other objects that people sincerely believe will bring them luck.
And, for those of you who insist upon carrying around a rabbit’s foot as your lucky charm you may want to consider this – it didn’t prove to be particularly lucky for the rabbit.
Many companies are allowing their employees to telecommute. Now you may be part of that group of workers who love working from home. However, your workspace at the kitchen table may be leading you to decide there is time for a change.
Many people don’t realize their homes need updating to be able to accept all the different technology modern employees use each workday. For instance, if your outlets are not wired for a certain amount of volts, your house needs the electrical wiring updated. Or minimally you need several electrical strips to plug in your cell phone charger, your modem and router, cable or Internet box, printer, scanner, and copier.
Your computer may need software updated to be able to communicate back and forth with your supervisor back at the office. You may need to download certain teleconferencing software or Skype programs to attend meetings with everyone via the computer.
Although more companies are allowing their employees to work from home, some are still quite skeptical. While a few are just worried about losing control over their employees, administrators know that some of their people are not up to the task. You must be honest with your employer, if you are generally an undisciplined person who will be tempted to watch television or take too many breaks being unsupervised. Then you can be allowed to stay on site to avoid eventually being suspended or fired.
Without a doubt, the 21st Century has seen an upswing in the number of employees being allowed to telecommute from their homes. A bit of self-reflection and honesty will go a long way in determining whether working from home is for you, or commuting through heavy traffic each day but being productive is the route you should take. As they say, honesty is the best policy, especially when it comes to working from home.
Mention the title: Department of Motor Vehicles, also known as the DMV, and you hear a chorus of collective groans. While it is true those groans have not been without merit, in recent years there has been a collective effort to improve DMV services.
At the time of application they can also choose to register to vote and decide if they want to be an organ donor upon their death. So the DMV acts as a one-stop shop for actions people often procrastinate about, rather than directly address.
Other services at the DMV include getting initial license plates or renewal stickers for their cars. Specialty plates can also be ordered for an additional fee. Truck drivers can take their Commercial driver’s license tests and obtain their permits or licenses. Non-commercial driver’s permits, tests, and licenses are also given here.
For those with suspended licenses, they can be re-instated at the DMV. Adults and children needing an I.D. card can buy one here. Motorcyclists can obtain their specialty licenses.
States requiring emissions testing should provide more stations, in other locations near people’s homes. Also, giving more time to those whose vehicles fail the test, is requested, due to the high repair cost. Not everyone has the high dollar figures available. Therefore more time is needed to raise the money.
Offering a partial renewal sticker so you can still utilize your vehicle, with a two month deadline to get the problem fixed and go back through emissions, would help thousands. This would solve a huge issue in those states requiring cars be tested and pass. More DMV offices need to open evenings and weekends. This would accommodate people working during the hours they are open, so people don’t have to take time off.
These are just a few suggestions. DMVs have come a long way with beneficial services to consumers, but surely have much further to go in the 21st Century.
Having the annual office picnic at the park is fine but a little out in the open and in front of God and the entire universe. Wouldn’t it be great if you could enjoy the out of doors yet still feel somewhat private and marginally hidden from prying eyes? If you have one of those fenced in, secluded or hedged in yards you might unknowingly have the perfect location for your next office blow out.
Coolers will keep things in bottles and cans cold, while a spare cooler of fresh, distilled ice will serve nicely for blender drinks and cocktails. Don’t forget the fresh, juicy pieces of fruit on those little sticks that look like swords and those brightly colored little umbrellas that make cocktails fun. And if the summer months are when your party is taking place you might even consider renting a small pool if you don’t already have one. You don’t have to go with a full-blown Jacuzzi but wouldn’t that be something to talk about back at the office?
Oh and, don’t forget to be a good neighbor by warning everyone on the block ahead of time. You may even consider extending the invitation but be sure to mention that it is an office party. That way you’ve been cordial in warning them and even inviting them but they may decline the offer knowing that it is going to be a select group.
A hysterectomy is a major surgery. If you have recently undergone this procedure, then you are going to have to take it easy for a while afterwards. Doctors are likely to recommend a hysterectomy for various reasons. This surgery is option for some and there are alternatives in many cases, but not all. However, if you opt for the procedure, you will also need to reconcile with the fact that there is a recovery period. Among the conditions that facilitate the need for a hysterectomy, the most serious is cervical or uterine cancer. With early detection, a patient can sometimes be treated by radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
There are also many non-cancerous reasons for hysterectomy surgery. Fibroid tumors, severe endometriosis and heavy uterine bleeding are some of those conditions. If a hysterectomy is required it may be possible to perform it without the removal of both ovaries, this is known as a partial hysterectomy. This leaves a woman the possibility of becoming pregnant at a later time.
What Is Involved
A full hysterectomy requires the removal of the cervix, both fallopian tubes, both ovaries and part or all of the uterus. At one time the only type of hysterectomy was an abdominal hysterectomy. This involves several incision points and the incision is similar to the one women have during a Cesarean birth. The hospital stay for this type of surgery was three to five days. The recovery could last up to six weeks. But with advances in medicine there are other options and there is hope for a shorter recovery time and less pain and scarring.
A Less Invasive Method
There have been great improvements in the surgical procedures for a hysterectomy. The move has been towards less invasive methods like the Da Vinci Hysterectomy. This procedure only requires a few tiny incisions and uses robotics in the surgical procedure. Many patients are only hospitalized for 24 hours. Da Vinci Hysterectomies use cameras to magnify the view inside the body; the surgeon controls a robotic arm to perform the surgery. This robotic arm gives the surgeon precise control over his hand movements which are being performed by tiny robotic instruments, inserted into the body. These advances mean you are able to heal faster, have fewer complications, less blood loss, less risk of infections and less scarring. Regardless of which procedure you opt for, it is important to get a full medical clearance, before you return to work.
Working at home can be a very rewarding experience. Not only does it allow you to avoid morning and rush hour traffic, it gives you the freedom to make your own hours and puts you in control of your future. If you have a profession that allows you to work at home, you should definitely consider it, but first you have to consider whether or not you have room in your home, for such an endeavor.
What Do You Do?
Deciding whether or not there is enough room to work at home really is going to depend on what you do for a living or, at least, what you plan on doing for a living from your home. There are plenty of professions that will allow you to work from home, but you will truly need to designate space to work as an office. For instance, if you were planning to design a garage with a man cave, you may want to reconsider and instead turn that man cave into an office, where you can work from home.
If you realize that you don’t have enough room in your home to dedicate as a workspace, you may want to consider simply making room. Home renovations can be expensive but many home improvements are tax deductible and if it gives you the chance to work from home, why not consider it? In the end, you are making room for your new future and there are very few investments better than those you make in your future.
If given the opportunity, most people would choose to work from home if they could. It is convenient and saves gas and money, not to mention adding a little less carbon monoxide to the atmosphere by taking one more car out of the rat race. While some people may really crave that busy office setting, there are plenty who would prefer the peaceful setting that they can find in a home office. In the end, if your home is big enough and you have the opportunity to work from home, you should take it.
It’s hard to even locate a building, work related or otherwise, that still allows smoking. The latest commercial about the guy with lung cancer or COPD or some smoking-related ailment (he is clearly on oxygen) who never smoked, but worked in a smoke filled environment is a pretty good testament as to why. Second hand smoke kills. Maybe instead of advertising for non-smoking the electronic cigarette industry should hire this guy.
Enjoy a Smoky Treat… Albeit with No Smoke
Now there’s nothing written in stone that says that this is going to be a solution down the line, but at least temporarily it hasn’t been banned in very many establishments. These electronic cigarettes come in a multitude of flavors, including everything from fruity goodness to authentic tobacco flavoring. You are inhaling and exhaling a harmless water vapor mixed with whatever dose of nicotine you decide upon, or no nicotine at all. With some models, a light at the end of the electronic cigarette glows upon inhale, making it appear more like the real thing. It’s a gimmick, but it works. You no longer need to worry about having a lighter or matches in your pocket, but you might want to carry a charger or a spare battery just in case.
Every Party Has a Pooper
Of course the powers that be couldn’t possibly let smokers have their electronic cigarettes in peace, without making some kind of a fuss about it. Though it hasn’t been banned in many places, there are establishments that have oddly enough banned use of electronic cigarettes. I’m not sure how something like this can offend non-smokers, when there are no ashes, no smoke, no carcinogens, no nothing. Just a smoker enjoying a little battery operated device. I’m sure those non-smokers think nothing of it, when they plop their screaming baby down next to my table (who by the way can eat absolutely nothing on the menu) thereby completely disrupting my evening out... but far be it from them to put up with a completely harmless electronic cigarette.
Whether you’re at work or at play, smoking an electronic cigarette is a vast improvement over the old-fashioned cancer sticks. If you are a cigar smoker however, you’re going to have to hang in there just a little bit longer. Rest assured, as you read this, scientists are working on the electronic cigar. Remember cigar smokers, don’t inhale.
Have you ever walked into an office that looks like it hasn’t been cleaned, since Eisenhower was in office? It isn’t a pretty sight. There are usually food crumbs on the copier, the printers look grimy, and you don’t even want to touch any of the computer keyboards. If you work in one of these offices, the clutter and mess can give you health problems down the line, even if the health problem is only anxiety related. The office you work in may not be nearly as bad as this, but you still want to make sure that you keep things clean, so that the equipment in your office will last as long as it was meant to.
If you work in a fast paced office where you are running up against hard deadlines every day, chances are that you don’t always have time to step out for lunch, choosing instead to simply work through lunch, while you eat at your desk. Unfortunately, when you are doing this, you are also leaving pieces of your lunch everywhere at your desk. This means that you can potentially get food particles and trash in the keyboard of your computer, your printer, the computer itself…really, there is no place that is safe from contamination. Even if you aren’t eating at your desk, if you don’t take the time to clean your equipment periodically, you could be throwing money down the drain.
Keeping Things Clean
Even though you may have a busy office life, that is no reason to let things fall into mechanical failure due to your lack of cleaning. Really, it isn’t all that tough to keep your office equipment clean and it only takes a few moments of your day. For instance, you can use a can of compressed air to clean out the dust that is accumulating in your computer tower and to clear out the crumbs from your computer keyboard. There are even other cleaning supplies that are meant specifically for an office setting that would be very helpful to you that could save you money in the long run. The fact is that it costs much more money to replace those broken pieces of equipment than it does to simply make sure that they are cleaned and maintained.
When you are running through that rat race, simple things like keeping your office clean can fall to the wayside. Really, it is no wonder! When you are trying to put together a presentation for that huge client, you really aren’t thinking about dust. However, not only will keeping things clean make your equipment last longer, it will give a better impression when that client comes to visit.
